🇭🇷 Croatia | 📅 7 days in May 2024 | 🌷 Spring

This is how much we (2 people) spent during 7 days in Croatia, in May 2024 (Spring). Hopefully this helps you budget and plan your trip to Croatia!

For reference, we're nature-loving, value-seeking 20-something year olds from Australia who think with their stomachs. Hopefully this helps you plan and budget your trip to Croatia! Three money saving tips for Croatia below!

💲How much we spent

Total spend*: 1,171 AUD  | 785 USD  | 703 EUR

Daily spend: 149 AUD  | 100 USD  | 89 EUR

* The above prices are without international travel and shopping costs (i.e. arriving in country)

🛏️ Accomodation: 57 AUD /day  402 AUD | 270 USD | 241 EUR

Accomodation in Dubrovnik was surprisingly affordable... once you got out of the touristic areas. The price of food and activities on the coast and islands really shocked us at first, but if you just walk 100m out of the touristic areas, accomodation became value-packed! Our private room in Hvar was awesome and gave us amazing sunset views every day!

🍽️ Food: 59 AUD /day     413 AUD | 277 USD | 248 EUR

This was where Croatia really hurt out wallet. Food in Dubrovnik, Split and the islands are EXPENSIVE!! Though each spot we visited did have affordable options, we decided to cook as much as we could. One of the only cheap eats on Hvar was Big Bang Fast Food, which was, to quote Action Bronson, f****n delicious.

🚶🏻‍♂️ Activities: 0 AUD /day  0 AUD | 0 USD | 0 EUR

For activities, we didn't do any paid ones! We were happy to just chill on the beaches and roam the towns, exploring historical sights. With the beauty and cleanliness of Croatia's beaches, we weren't complaining.

🚌 Local transport: 19 AUD /day     218 AUD | 146 USD | 131 EUR

Just like Greece, the ferry is what hurt us the most as the biggest expense in Croatia. Most ferries are reasonably priced, but some longer-distance ones, such as Dubrovnik -> Hvar hurt our wallets. There are tons of operators, so make sure to shop around before booking your ferry. The most popular websites are Feryhopper, Jadrolinija and Ferry Croatia.

🧺 Misc: 1 AUD /day           9 AUD | 6 USD | 6 EUR

This category encompasses anything and everything outside of the other categories, and shopping below. Typically this includes laundry, pharmaceuticals, buying replacement for things, and in this case toilet and ATM withdrawal fees. PRO TIP for ATMs in Croatia, avoid the blue and yellow Euronet ATMs, they charge an arm and a leg for withdrawals and exchange rates.

🛍️ Shopping: 0 AUD /day  0 AUD | 0 USD | 0 EUR

We did no shopping during our 7-day trip in Croatia.

🧠 Tips on saving money in Croatia 🇭🇷

  1. Spend as little time in Dubrovnik as possible! It’s even more expensive than Venice / Paris on average, in our experience. Most of the sights in Dubrovnik can also be done in a day. So move on!

  2. Venture out of the hotspots to find more local affair and prices! This applies to accomodation, food and drinks. Sometimes even 100m out of touristic areas is enough.

  3. Carry cash! Some places we went to in Croatia provided discounts for cash payments.
